This Twist on a Window Box Is Modern, Rustic, and Absolutely Charming

Having plants in the kitchen windows adds a fresh and organic touch to your space. It brings added life to the area of your home where you spend most of your time.  In addition, plants are incredibly budget friendly.

Window boxes are the go-to option for people who want to add plants to their kitchen. However, they can be overplayed. Everyone seems to have them, so they can lack a little personality.  If you add an expected element to the space (like a rectangle), the result is not cute, but boring.  Department store-ish.

If you purchase a generic window box from a big box store, you're going to close off your  Kitchens should be open and airy. You add plants to increase this feeling. A window box that obstructs the view of the outdoors and diminishes the light is the complete opposite of what you want to accomplish.

Instead, design your own window box creation with containers you love. I pulled off this "window box illusion" by lining up metal pots side by side.  Your eyes automatically read the arrangement as one piece, creating the impression of a window box.

Like everything else in interior design, choose things you love. In this case, the owner fancied silver distressed metal.  We picked up on this by matching the zinc kitchen island top.  So we lined the containers up side by side, selected functional herbs that both smelled wonderful and that the owner would use in cooking.

You don't have to use containers that are exactly the same, but keep them the same color and line them up side-by-side. Don't forget the fresh herbs and the result will be equally charming and tasty!

Here's to freshening your kitchen!  Happy window-ing!!
